The Role of Rotary in Malmö and the World
Aug. 18, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Current MIRC President Charlotte Beskow is an engineer by training and has worked for over 30 years in the fascinating world of international space. “Space” as in ESA, CNES, DLR, NASA, JAXA, Roscosmos, the International Space Station, launchers and satellites. This represents a multicultural environment of the first order.

However, the talk on Aug 18 will concentrate on her experiences within Rotary. Charlotte became a member with Rotary The Hague Metropolitan (NL) in 2001. When travelling for work, she took the opportunity to visit clubs at the various locations.  Work then took her to French Guiana so she transferred to the club of Kouoru (FR). When she left French Guiana in 2022 she joined Malmö International Rotary Club. She has been President twice in other clubs and will share her experiences of Rotary and its role in the community.

This will be a hybrid meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö, and virtually on Zoom.

Rotary In Malmö: Strength in Diversity
Aug. 25, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Tonight's guest speaker is Andrew Creighten, Area Governor for the Malmö Rotary Clubs (2024-2027)

Andrew will share thoughts on how the Rotary clubs in Malmö can strengthen their collaboration. Building on the work of Karl-Erik Grevendal, his predecessor, he’ll reflect on the first steps that have already been taken — and explore what more can be done to deepen cooperation moving forward.

Andrew has been an active Rotarian for many years.  He embodies the power of service, connection, and global community. Rotary has been a meaningful part of both his personal and professional journey, has served twice as club president, was Membership Chair for District 2390, and currently is Area Governor for the Malmö clubs, with responsibility for Club Visioning in District 2395.

'Senior Moments' -- A special MIRC meeting
Sep. 22, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Join us for Senior Moments, a unique panel-style meeting where our seasoned Rotarians will share:
Their Rotary experiences and highlights
Favorite memories from over the years
Words of inspiration for the next generation of Rotarians
One of our newer members will guide the conversation as interviewer and facilitator, making this an engaging dialogue across generations.
Whether you’re a guest curious about Rotary or a longtime friend of our club, this promises to be a warm, inspiring, and memorable evening.
Don’t miss it!

Ödet: Changemakers for a sustainable future
Sep. 29, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Tonight we will hear from Torben and Lotte Ohlander about their initiative, Ödet, that aims to create an urban community center and green hub in Södra Sofielund, Malmö.

Their vision is to promote social cohesion and environmental sustainability through a space that supports circular economy, sharing services, "repair cafés" and community-driven activities.

Key highlights:

  • In 2024, they piloted an incubator program for "circular micro-entrepreneurs" with around 20 participants.
  • A co-living space was established with five student residents.
  • A cooperative association was formed to support collaboration and funding applications around circular economy initiatives.
  • The garage is now used as an extended meeting and event space.
  • During 2025, Ödet was a part of the national Vinnova project "The Neighborhood of the Future - the Hyper-Local Heart of the 15-Minute City"

The long-term goal is for Ödet to inspire similar initiatives in Skåne, Sweden, and internationally.

The space is intended as an inclusive, collaborative platform—a "neutral home" where people can explore needs, test ideas, and build together. There's a strong emphasis on keeping it flexible, community-led, and open to global collaborations.

Why is the obvious so hard to understand?
Nov. 17, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Tonight's guest speaker, Jeanette Ohlsson Carlborg, will talk about how cultural awareness can give us an understanding of the similarities and differences we encounter in others we come into contact with  and why it matters. Similarities and differences, (values, beliefs, behaviour, time references or body language) may be large or small, but they have a major impact on building international relationships. What works very well in one country may not work at all in another. To understand the people around us, we need other frames of reference to be able to interpret well and communicate effectively, something that is of huge value to an international club like Malmö International Rotary Club.

Jeanette Ohlsson Carlborg has lived abroad on various continents for 20 plus years and is a student/historian of religion and the founder of Kulturlänk AB. She has specialised in cross-cultural communication and given lectures and courses for the past 25 years. Her vision is to connect people across cultures, borders and religions to achieve stronger positive outcomes.

Timeless Parenting Lessons & Effective Leadership
Nov. 24, 2025 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

"Parenting cracked me open. It made me a better leader." – Diego Fiche

This is a talk for parents, leaders, and anyone curious about human development, as individuals and in relationship with others.

In this talk, guest speaker Diego Fiche explores how everyday moments in parenting can reveal powerful principles of effective leadership. Through personal stories and practical insights, he invites us to reflect on the deeper experiences that shape the way we lead in our families, our work, and our wider communities.

Diego Fiche is a proud father of four and an eternal student of parenting and leadership. He is a Learning & Development leader at IKEA and a seasoned facilitator of leadership and team development programs. He brings a diverse background across industries, having worked with companies like adidas, BMW, and Hyper Island.

Also, an executive coach and yoga teacher, Diego helps people grow through presence, connection, and emotional intelligence. He believes parenting is one of life’s most powerful leadership journeys, and that how we show up at home shapes how we lead in the world.

Musical Connections: The Ping Pong Playlist
Dec. 03, 2025 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Three members of Malmö International Rotary Club — Sharon, Pete, and Ray — are joining forces to bring a unique show to internet radio this December to benefit The Rotary Foundation, and you're invited to tune in!

The Ping Pong Playlist turns music selection into a friendly, creative game. One participant plays a song, and the next must respond with another track connected in some way — musically, thematically, or even just by a shared spark of inspiration.

The result is a lively daisy-chain of sound, ideas, and conversation, as well as an opportunity to make a donation to help advance Rotary International service projects for eradicating polio, promoting peace and improving developing communities.

The Ping Pong Playlist will be featured on Sharon’s “Viking Diaries” broadcast on Blast Radio and Mixcloud Live on Wednesday, 3 December at 19:00 (Copenhagen time).

🎧 Listen Live: Audio: www.blastradio.com/vikingdiaries

Video Livestream: www.mixcloud.com/live/vikingdiaries

The links will take you directly to the show, but both platforms offer free apps if you prefer to listen in your Android or iOS device. Mixcloud users can also join the live chat to share comments and connections as the musical rally unfolds.

This light-hearted project reflects the spirit of Rotary — fellowship, creativity, and community connection through shared experiences. As Ray puts it, “The fun is in finding the hidden thread between songs — and between people.”

Our Joints: How They Age, and Why They Hurt
Jan. 19, 2026 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

We move to live. Whether it's shopping for groceries or laughing with friends, we are constantly in motion—often taking our joints for granted. That is, until… ouch! Suddenly, our joints start to hurt.

Osteoarthritis is the world's most common cause of joint pain and disability. For a long time, we dismissed it as an inevitable part of getting old. But science has moved on. We now know that OA is a complex disease that is about much more than just "wear and tear."

Join Associate Professor Andrea Dell’Isola for a fascinating look at how our joints really work. Based at Lund University’s Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Andrea studies not only how we treat joint pain, but also how it connects to seemingly unrelated health issues — like diabetes and high blood pressure — revealing that to care for your joints, you need to first care for your body.

Reciprocity Circle (Members only)
Jan. 26, 2026 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Tonight the Malmö International Rotary Club is hosting a Reciprocity Circle in which members can present their current professional or personal challenges to the club for advice and networking around solutions.

Because some of the information shared may be of a sensitive or proprietary nature, only MIRC members, Open Doors members, fellow Rotarians and invited guests will be admitted. This event falls under our motto of ‘Service Above Self’ in that we work to support and help our fellow members in Malmö International Rotary Club.

The membership of Malmö International Rotary Club is comprised of adult professionals from 20 countries representing a multitude of industries, with each member having many years of professional and international experience. This incredible source of knowledge, experience, and networks is available for MIRC members to tap.

By making members of the club aware of areas in which other members need help and assistance, we can draw from this comprehensive pool of contacts, hopefully helping our members overcome their professional and personal hurdles quickly and easily.

This will be a hybrid meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö, and virtually on Zoom.

Can software & AI help us being more sustainable?
Feb. 02, 2026 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

To some extent, sustainable digitalization concerns all of us, e.g., individuals, communities, and industry; especially in the context of modern developed societies where software is everywhere, artificial intelligence is increasingly used, and we are more aware and caring about sustainability.

Tonight's guest speaker, Romina Spalazzese, is an Associate Professor in Computer Science and Vice Director of the Sustainable Digitalisation Research Centre at Malmö University. Her research interests include software and hardware architectures, quality, and AI during development, deployment, and operation of complex modern systems, while striving for more sustainable software and society. Romina collaborates with Industry since more than 12 years and the focus of her recent investigations was mainly on intelligent and trustworthy Internet of Things systems.

She will use two examples from her research, heating systems in our buildings and industrial manufacturing of kitchen furniture, she will provide some perspectives, challenges, and opportunities about sustainable digitalisation - a complex topic including both technological and social aspects.

This will be a hybrid meeting held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö, and virtually on Zoom.

I Can’t Draw & Other Myths on Thinking Together
Feb. 09, 2026 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Many people believe that visual thinking is about artistic talent – it isn’t. In this short, focused session, our guest speaker will challenge a few common myths about drawing, meetings, and collaboration.

Kristian Rönne is a visual facilitator and consultant based in Malmö who works with organisations, leadership teams, and educators who are dealing with complex challenges where clarity, collaboration, and trust really matter. He will share concrete case stories from real organisations to show how visual facilitation and structured dialogue help groups clarify complex issues, align around decisions, and make better use of the collective intelligence in the room.

The session is designed to be fun, practical and interactive. Participants will leave with a simple visual framework and a few questions they can use in their own meetings and board work.

Democracy & Our Future: Common ground or Populism?
Feb. 16, 2026 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

“By the people for the people” is a mantra that has channelled throughout history as an everlasting commitment to democracy and inclusivity. But as of late, we seem to have lost our footing.

As we hand over to a younger generation largely accustomed to peace, stability, and strong democratic institutions, we must remind ourselves why compromises and accommodations are important. Otherwise, we risk forgetting why democracy matters, while turning toward alternative systems.

One of the major concerns is how the younger generation can stand up to authoritarianism without understanding its dangerous allure through lived experience? This is not to say we are destined to relive divisive regimes, but it is meant to emphasise the enduring need to fight for democracy and our shared future.

We will discuss these major questions with tingiht's guiest speaker Edward Louis Johnson and hopefully appreciate our individual significance and the role we all play in democracy. As a student and writer, Edward has organised people to speak truth and extensively researched democratic history. He believes in compromises, listening, and finding common ground.
